I think it really depends on your current level. In general...

Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese (FREE)- I'm a big fan of this app. It's basically a copy of his blog, but in iPhone form (http://www.guidetojapanese.....

JapanesePod101.com - Not really an app, but relevant in the sense that you can get the podcasts on your iPhone and the transcripts come with it. I find this especially helpful for studying on the go. (http://www.japanesepod101.c...

KanjiBox - Free app that is also usable via Facebook on the PC. It basically tests your Kanji ability based on the old JLPT Kanji list (1-4). As you run through the drills, it remembers which Kanji you do and don't remember well and drills your harder on the ones you aren't familiar with yet.

I would recommend avoiding most Japanese idiom apps. I've researched into a couple and found several idioms that aren't naturally used in Japanese conversation. I hope that helps!

Re: Welcome to JapaneseExpressions.com!

what iphone apps would you recommend? for learning 'natural' or standard Japanese"

Re: Idiom: I’m Pulling Your Leg! No, I’m not joking!

If you have the time, would mind sharing your experiences? I ask
because, like many Japanese students, I thought I could communicate a
certain idea by translating a common English idiom into Japanese. It
doesn't work! Hehe

Re: New feature: Hovering Hiragana!

Jappleng,

Thanks, but I'm just doing it manually right now. The various
plugins that have similar functionality using a db and jquery seem to
have issues with 日本語. I'd like to eventually automate it.
I'll let you know if I find anything in the future!

Re: Drink + Communication = 飲みニケーション

Of course! I'm a big fan of Rikaichan. I understand perapera-kun is also quite good.

I figured I'd add this feature to challenge people studying kanji and make reading the posts more accessible to the less-hardcore amongst us. Thanks for the comment!

Re: New feature: Hovering Hiragana!

Rikaichan also works :)
